Salisbury, NH
Salisbury is a picturesque rural New England town nestled between Mount Kearsarge and Ragged Mountain. As of the 2011 census, 1,382 people call Salisbury their home. In 1790, the first year the census was taken, 1,372 residents were recorded.
As you travel through Salisbury you see not only a town rich with history, but beautiful green fields, antique homes, rock walls and beautiful breathtaking colors in the fall. The town was first granted in 1736 by the Massachusetts government. It was named Baker’s Town, in honor of Captain Thomas Baker, a famous Indian scout. In 1749 the town was renamed Stevens-town, after Colonel Ebenezer Stevens of Kingston. It was incorporated by the New Hampshire government in 1768 as Salisbury after Salisbury, Massachusetts. Among the first settlers was Ebenezer Webster, father of Daniel Webster, orator and statesman, who was born in Salisbury in 1782. His birthplace is available for visitation.
Many quintessential homes and buildings date back to the 1700s, including several in Salisbury Heights. Here you find the Town Hall, Baptist Meeting house, Museum, and Library. Tour the historic Hearse House Museum in the center of town and eat lunch under the 200 year old maples. The Salisbury Historical Society has an exciting array of historical maps, documents and many historical cemeteries.
The Blackwater River, part of the Merrimack Valley watershed runs through Salisbury. A popular fishing and recreation spot is The Bay, a natural lake-like section of the river.
The villages are Salisbury Heights, Scribners Corner, Smiths Corner, Thompson Corner, and West Salisbury. Businesses that have made Salisbury their homes are Black Bear Vineyard & Winery, Crossroads Country Store, The Barn Store of New England, and the Higher Ground Alpacas Farm.
