It was named Baker’s Town, in honor of Captain Thomas Baker, a famous Indian scout. In 1749 the town was renamed Stevens-town, after Colonel Ebenezer Stevens of Kingston. It was incorporated by the New Hampshire government in 1768 as Salisbury after Salisbury, Massachusetts. Among the first settlers was Ebenezer Webster, father of Daniel Webster, orator and statesman, who was born in Salisbury in 1782. His birthplace is available for visitation.
